Who is considered a cross-border worker in Switzerland?

The following regulations apply to cross-border workers from EU/EFTA member states:

  • Residence in an EU/EFTA member state;

  • Employer or self-employed business based in Switzerland;

  • Typically, a daily or at least weekly return to the residence in the foreign country;

  • Right to professional and geographical mobility throughout Switzerland.

What residence permit do I need as a cross-border worker?

Cross-border workers who have an employment certificate (employment contract) for between three months and up to a year will receive a cross-border worker permit for the duration of their employment. This permit can be extended if the employment continues. For employment relationships lasting one year or longer, a cross-border worker permit with a validity of five years will be issued. The employer will be listed on the cross-border worker permit.

Cross-border workers who wish to engage in self-employed activities in Switzerland will receive a permit valid for five years, provided they can demonstrate that they are engaged in self-employment.

Do I need health insurance in Switzerland as a cross-border worker?

Yes. Generally, cross-border workers residing abroad must have Swiss health insurance (principle of the place of employment).

Those insured in Switzerland pay the EU/EFTA premiums that apply to their country of residence. Insured individuals with modest economic means are entitled to premium reductions.

For more answers to frequently asked questions about mandatory health insurance, you can refer to the guide from the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG).
